Out of Bounds Weekend - Saturday's results

10 June 2007  |
These days, the Bikepark Leogang is the place to be. The Saturday program was really exciting for all of the spectators and bike fans. It started with the qualifying of the 26TRIX, which gave the event double backflip number one. After that, the spectators watched the finals of the Kona Top 2 Bottom Terminator. The day ended with the first two rounds of the final runs for 26TRIX. On Friday night, Jamie Goldman won the Bunnyhop contest, and as of Saturday night, he is sitting in the top spot for 26TRIX. At 11am the 26TRIX qualifying took place. The 16-year old Alex Pro from Whister, who made his way over to compete in the Wheels of Speed downhill race and also in the biggest dirt jump contest ever, surprised everybody when he threw down a double backflip in his second qualifying run. This was Alex’s first double backflip on dirt, making him the youngest rider to stick the double flip. The next double flip came around in the first part of the finals. To avoid the potential rain that is forecast for tomorrow, the riders decided to run two final runs today and two final runs tomorrow, with the top two runs counting towards the overall result. Andreu Lacondeguy qualified second behind Cameron McCaul and used both of his runs today to attempt the double backflip. He needed three tries – one was out of the scoring – to stand it but in the end we saw a happy crowd of riders and spectators who welcomed Andreu. The riders in the final round put on quite a show for the crowd in Leogang although the wind was beginning to affect the jumps. Finals will continue tomorrow with another two runs. So far Jamie Goldman has impressed the judges the most with his solid runs. It seems to be a successful weekend for Jamie so far. Yesterday he showed everybody that he can also do other stuff than 360s or huge flips. He won the Bunnyhop contest on Friday night (clearing 95cm over a bar) and went home with a Kona package and some cash. Around noon the finals in the male and female class of the Kona Top 2 Bottom Terminator took place. The HU corporation built the Terminator track specifically for the event, and people from different nations all over the world showed their best on it. Kathy Pruitt, US national champion, came down with the fastest time in the female class and won the dual freeride slalom over the world cup downhill racer Angie Hohenwarter. In the men class, we saw guys like Andries Nortier from South Africa, but also local talents like Andi Zehentner from Saalbach. Times were really close and the action was great. In the end Thomas Bubla rode the fastest time and is now the winner of the Kona Stinky Garbanzo. Tomorrow will be the second part of the finals for the 26TRIX, we can expect some more crazy tricks. With two double backflips going down before the last run in the event, we know that some riders are going to continue pushing the level of riding even higher! 26TRIX standings (after 2 runs) à 2 more runs to go! 1.
